I need to plan a 1 day itinerary to show a guest NYC. She is visiting from San Francisco and has never been to the East Coast - let alone New York. Growing up in Connecticut, I've done my fair share of exploring the city. But, I'm trying to decide on a reasonable schedule of somewhat touristy - somewhat local/unique things to do with our guest.
Keep in mind, we will have 2 young children with us. They are both wonderful travellers - and usually well behaved. However, this is a factor in the length of our day and the speed of our travel. We are going to drop the car off in Dover & take the train to Penn Station. Ideally, most of our day would be easily navigated (walking or subway) from Penn Station.
Any suggestions?

What day of the week is she coming? The Union Square Farmer's market is really cool and the kids can be loud since its outside.
She is coming in the Monday after Easter (late) and we are planning on either Tues. or Wed. in the city. I'll check out the market - thanks!
When I get new guests to the city I always ask them to come up with there top three things that they are DYING to see. From there, I add great restaurants and other small attractions into the mix. I have not done the city with kids (yet) so that will add a different element. But, there are so many fun things for kids to do. One thing I've been dying to try is the peanut butter company restaurant. It looks like so much fun and would be great with kids. There is always the ferris wheel in Toys R Us in Times Square (long line, but she would get to see Times Square and the kids would have a blast). Hope that helps! =)
MMM - Great idea! I love FAO Schwartz, but with the Toys R' Us being so close to Times Square it would be easy to do both! Any great suggstions for lunch near Times Square?
OK, So I just voted for that hair thing in the upper right hand corner and said you should stay the same. I think my vote should count more than everyone else because I have to live with you. Smile, I love you.
Ok babe;) Your vote does count more - but still - I'm just talking a little more highlighted - not stripper platinum:)
As for the blonde, I just went blonder myself and I'm happy as a clam with it. Not to sound too lame but I feel all sunshiney now. Ok I'm going to stop before I say anything worse. lol
How old are the kids? I think the Seaport is always fun because there are performers all over the place, balloon animals, magicians and such. But if you are going to be in mid-town I would stick with the toy stores and maybe the Empire State Building. If it is a nice day you could always go to the zoo in Central Park too.
PPP - I am going blonder. I am naturally dark blonde and have it slightly lightened. I usually go a little bit lighter in the spring & then let the sun do it's work in the summer (I know, damaging - but looks fantastic).
Jilly - the kids are nearly 2 and 4. Since they are our kids (and not our guest's) we are looking to do activities that will be ok with kids but are not necessarily "kids' activities." Does this make any sense? :) For example, we won't be hitting any bars on this trip to the city, but the schedule won't be totally kid-centered either. I liked some of your suggestions though & will definitely check them out.
I'm not an New Yorker, but I've visited many times and we try to go as much as we can. If it's nice and you venture into the park one day, one of my favorite things to do is have lunch or brunch at the Boat House restaurant. The view is incredible. It is not uber fancy -pretty relaxed at lunch, but that may or may not be an option if your kids don't like to sit still!
